Welcome to First Point Photography (FPP) School Website. As well as being a contemporary photographic studio in Bournemouth, Dorset, we also have the honour of being an accredited City&Guilds training centre, offering City&Guilds Approved Portrait and Wedding Photography Diplomas, up to level 3, for the keen amateur to the improving professional. In addition to this FPP is also an ELCAS approved learning provider (Approved training provider for the UK Armed Forces)

On completion of all level 3 courses, all students are welcome to spent two weeks work experience with us in our studios. This will involve the day to day running of a commercial studio, helping with shoots, editing, printing and dealing with customers.

Here at FPP we are very passionate about photography and strive to produce the best for all our students and clients and to make ourselves a centre of excellence for photography. This is reflected in how we run our courses and teach our students how to become successful Wedding and Portrait Photographers, whether working from their home or a studio.

The training takes places from our two fully equipped air conditioned studios, by our vastly experienced, formally trained and qualified team. We will teach you how to set-up, achieve bookings and run a successful and profitable business. As well as the theory the courses are all very practical and involve numerous shoots with models, both in the studio and out on location. As well as the knowledge of how achieve your dream of becoming a Successful Wedding and Portrait Photographer, you will leave with a comprehensive portfolio that you can use for your advertising and to show to potential clients.

This course will train and prepare you for working and freelancing in commercial photography and creative industries. As well as covering the syllabus for ABC Awards level 3 Award in Visual Art (Employment and Freelancing in Creative Industries) the course is also an accredited programme by City & Guilds.

Through out the three weeks we will teach and prepare you for employment and freelancing in the creative industry of Photography.

Practical portrait photography sessions in the studio using a variety of models, including males, females and children/babies, will focus on familiarity with studio equipment (including home/mobile studios) and lighting. We will teach you how to set-up studio lights for different looks (including high and low key), measure the flash correctly and pose and direct your models.

During your second week you will cover more advanced skills including, flash and blur, low- key romantic, off camera flash, using various attachment to camera flash out on location, urban style portraits and still life.

The wedding seminar covers the whole aspect of wedding photography, from obtaining bookings through to producing the final album. In addition to the theory there will also be shoots with models on location at a local beauty spot, at home, in a church and in the studio. We will also cover technical difficulties you may encounter while photographing the intimate portraits of the bride and groom as well as how to set-up and pose the group photographs.

During the third week we will cover a variety of editing software, Professional Workflow and a selection of professional techniques used to improve and manipulate images.

The main objectives of the course are:

  • To Gain an ABC Level 3 Award in Visual Art (Employment and Freelancing in Creative Industries) Ofqual 500/8794/0
  • To Gain hands on experience in working in the creative industry of Photography
  • To Gain a City & Guilds accredited workshop diploma in Portrait and Wedding Photography
  • To Gain a City & Guilds accredited workshop diploma in Advanced Portrait and Wedding Photography
  • To Gain a City & Guilds accredited workshop diploma in Digital Manipulation
  • To learn advanced techniques in the studio & on location lighting
  • To gain experience in a variety of professional editing software including; Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Portrait Professional and Zenfolio
  • For you to create a strong commercial portfolio to use for advertising and to show to potential clients and employers

  • For you to create a portfolio of edited images that you can use for advertising and to show to potential clients

On completion of the courses, all students are welcome to spent two weeks work experience with us in our studios. This will involve the day to day running of a commercial studio, helping with shoots, editing, printing and dealing with customers.

The 3 day wedding seminar is the same as the 2 day seminar with an extra day to bring you up to speed with the technical side of using your camera on manual mode and how to set a camera flash unit. The morning session will cover how to set your camera manually, how to use a light meter and how to set up a flash unit both on and off the camera for wedding photography. In the afternoon we will use Photoshop to edit images ready to submit to the client. The remaining two days covers the whole aspect of wedding photography, from obtaining bookings through to producing the final album. In addition to the theory there will also be shoots with models on location at a local beauty spot, at home, in a church and in the studio. We will also cover technical difficulties you may encounter while photographing the intimate portraits of the bride and groom as well as how to set-up and pose the group photographs.

The main objectives of the seminar are;

  • To gain a City & Guilds workshop diploma in wedding photography
  • To be able to set your camera in manual settings
  • To correctly set your flash unit
  • To give you the experience and confidence to become a successful professional wedding photographer
  • To gain practical experience in directing and undertaking a wedding shoot
  • For you to create a strong portfolio that you can use for advertising and to show to potential clients

The wedding seminar covers the whole aspect of wedding photography, from obtaining bookings through to producing the final album. In addition to the theory there will also be shoots with models on location at a local beauty spot, at home, in a church and in the studio. We will also cover technical difficulties you may encounter while photographing the intimate portraits of the bride and groom as well as how to set-up and pose the group photographs.

The main objectives of the seminar are;

  • To gain a City & Guilds workshop diploma in wedding photography.
  • To give you the experience and confidence to become a successful professional wedding photographer
  • To gain practical experience in directing and undertaking a wedding shoot.
  • For you to create a strong portfolio that you can use for advertising and to show to potential clients.

Our short introduction courses are run on a Saturday morning and weekday evenings. The courses are aimed at the keen amateur photographer who is looking to develop their skills towards professional photography, and turning their hobby into a way of making money. The courses will give an insight on how to progress as a professional photographer as well as practical sessions in the studio and on location

  • Introduction to Bumps, Baby and Children Photography Introduction to Boudoir Photography
  • Introduction to Photoshop for the Wedding and Portrait photographer

This course is an optional extra course offered to those attending our 3 day Portrait, 5 day Wedding and Portrait, 10 day advanced or 15 day course. It covers the genre of Bump and Baby photography which is not included in those courses. It is not eligible for, or part of any Elcas funded courses.

This is a very popular studio sitting and can be very profitable. Some of our students are apprehensive and unsure how to approach this genre of photography, but understand that it’s very in vogue at the moment and offers a great earning potential. We will teach you various lighting techniques and how to pose and light a new-born baby

This course is an optional extra course offered to those attending our 3 day Portrait, 5 day Wedding and Portrait, 10 day advanced or 15 day course. It covers the genre of glamour photography which is not included in those courses. It is not eligible for, or part of any Elcas funded courses.

We are often requested for a more glamorous type of portfolio and also with our make-over shoots some clients want to include this. Some of our students are apprehensive and unsure how to approach this genre of photography, but understand that it’s something they may be asked for. The course also covers the legal and ethical aspects of glamour photography.

This course is an optional extra course offered to those attending our 3 day Portrait, 5 day Wedding and Portrait, 10 day advanced or 15 day course. It covers the genre of product photography which is not included in those courses. It is not eligible for, or part of any Elcas funded courses.

With most companies now having websites, product photography is an ever growing market. We will teach you how to set-up the studio lights for different looks and how to cost jobs to include image release certificates.
